Our winning streak has put us in the lead, making the Philippines a pageant powerhouse.

MANILA – Going by the number of international pageants we aced in 2015 the Philippines is clearly on a winning streak. Although these amazing wins have made us a pageant powerhouse, some would caution that this is not the time to rest on our laurels. Hanging on to our bounty of crowns in 2016 is going to be a big task.
How did we win so many beauty pageants in 2015? You might ask. Did our contestants discover a secret formula that gives them that competitive edge? Perhaps there’s something in the water in the Philippines?
Perez Hilton, one of the Miss Universe 2015 finals night judges, may have stumbled upon a clue to this mystery when he vehemently supported Miss Philippines, Pia Wurtzbach’s right to wear the Miss Universe 2015 crown. He said that the difference between Wurtzbach and Miss Colombia (who was mistakenly crowned the Queen) was that “Miss Philippines came to win”.
Likewise, the Philippine Inquirer Lifestyle reported that when boxing champ Floyd Mayweather beat Manny Pacquiao in May last year Pia Wurtzbach, Miss Philippines 2015, posted a tweet that turned out to be prophetic: “Kalma lang guys. Ako bahala. Babawi tayo sa Miss Universe!! (Keep calm, guys. Leave it to me. We’ll ace Miss Universe!)”
The bottom line is that our contestants are in it to win it. They are very competitive – Wurtzbach won the Binibining Pilipinas-Universe title on her third try.
They are also better prepared, spending between six months to several years honing their pageant skills. And where better to get pageant experience than in the Philippines – we have over 43 pageants and fashion shows in the country every year, including the big four – Bb. Pilipinas, Mutya Ng Pilipinas, Miss Philippines Earth and Miss World Philippines.
Ever since Gloria A. Diaz, 17, was crowned the first Filipino Miss Universe in 1969 Pinoys have gone gaga over beauty queens, says bloggist Jetset Alejandro. We place our pageant winners on a pedestal; they have high public profiles and doors open for them. Given the opportunities for fame and fortune there is no shortage of pageant contestants coming forward.
As reported in the Philippine media the following is a list of international beauty pageants that our representatives won big-time this year:
Miss Universe 2015: After 42 years Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach brought home the crown again. (Our previous wins were in 1969 and 1973.) The Philippines was placed in the top five of the Miss Universe pageant for the past four years.
Miss Earth 2015: Angelia Gabrena Ong. She was crowned by the 2014 winner Jamie Herrel, also from the Philippines. (The Philippines won Miss Earth twice in a row.)
Miss Globe 2015: Ann Lorraine Colis
Miss Tourism Queen of the Year International 2015: Leren Mae Bautista
Miss International Queen 2015: Trixie Maristela
Miss Scuba International 2015: Cindy Madduma
